Why climb Rinjani

  • The crater rim. Both rim camps sit at about 2,640 m and look straight down on Segara Anak, the lake inside the caldera, with the dark Barujari cone rising from the water. Senaru or Sembalun decides which rim you sleep on.
  • Sunrise on the summit. From the Sembalun rim you set off at about 2–3 am and climb 1,087 m in 3–4 hours to stand at 3,726 m as the sun comes up. See summit night for the hour-by-hour plan.
  • The lake and hot springs. Three-day treks drop into the caldera for a night by the water, then walk out through the forest on the Senaru side.
  • Senaru’s waterfalls. Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep are at the foot of the Senaru trail, a good easy day before or after the climb.

What a trek costs

In 2026 every trail was shut from 1 January to 31 March. The dates for the 2026–27 closure had not been announced when we checked on 21 October 2026.

How much does it cost to climb Rinjani?

Foreign trekkers pay the park Rp 250,000 per person per day on Senaru and Sembalun. On top of that, operators advertised guided treks of 2 to 4 days from about USD 180 to 350 per person on 21 October 2026.

What time does the summit climb start?

Operators set off from the Sembalun crater rim at about 2–3 am and allow 3–4 hours to reach the top for sunrise.
