Summit night means a 2–3 am start and sunrise from the top of Rinjani. You leave the Sembalun crater rim camp at 2,639 m and climb 1,087 m in the dark to the 3,726 m summit, which operators allow 3–4 hours for. Afterwards you come back down to the same camp, then either descend to Sembalun or carry on into the crater.

Before the night

  • Sleep early. The crew wakes you in the small hours, so the day before is the only rest you get.
  • Carry your own light and layers. You climb in the dark, to well above the rim camp.
  • Agree a turn-around time with your guide. You need to be back at camp in time to move on with the group.

Can you skip the summit?

Yes. The 2-day Senaru rim trip tops out at 2,641 m and has no night climb. See Senaru vs Sembalun for the trade-off, and costs for what each option is advertised at.
